It does'nt take a lot to foster a negative self image in a teenager. Nearly all of them are at least somewhat insecure about their external appearance because of various real or imaginary blemishes. The fragile self image and self respect of teenagers are problematical short of to deal with the pressure exerted by the opinions of others and the comparisons with various role-models that teenagers discover for themselves. Teenagers live in small worlds. Parents, friends and the amorphous group of half-familiar school mates are the limits of their social lives. As you would expect, teenagers have a tendency to attach extra meaning to the praise or evaluation coming from their acquaintances or school mates, on basis that parents love you anyway and are fatally biased. But, since adolescence can be very cruel to each other, the disapproval of school mates is normally hurtful and intended to hurt. This serves to boost the feelings of anxiety, uncertainty and self hatred, resulting in withdrawal from the social surroundings into anoticeableive world of grief and humiliation.
Teenagers are terribly earnest about outward appearances and criticism. They are still away from the age when human beings come to terms with themselves and are no longer much interested in what others say or think. Concealing one's body or face and feeling ashamed just because someone else believed that this is the thing to do is a misconstrue and teenagers must be helped to grasp this. A skin condition can be defeated with persistence and by using the best products. However, the psychological effects of spots must also be fought, or else they may never go away. The teenager who hated himself for having pimples on his face will turn into the adult who hates himself for being a little heavy or not making as much money as some co-worker.

The feeling of uneasiness and humiliation with oneself does not permanently go away in time. Occasionally it just finds a different dilemma to act as its power source. This is the lasting effect of teenage acne: Athritis is also associated with gout.
